Read the hand frame
The chart uses one selected first-position pattern, not every accidental available in first position. Read the note names before placing a finger: high and low second fingers depend on the key.
This is the instrument's highest open string. The fourth-finger B5 has no higher neighbouring open string to compare against; use a reference tone or tuner and listen before adjusting.
A complete short exercise
- Play the open E string (E5) for four slow beats. Let the sound settle, then name the next pitch before moving.
- Play E5 - F#5 - G5 - A5 - B5 and reverse the order, using one relaxed bow per note. Begin at a pace that lets you hear each change.
- Repeat just F#5 to G5. This gap is one semitone (a half step). Compare the spacing with the note table rather than spreading every finger equally.
- Pause if the hand feels strained. The picture shows semitone relationships, not measured distances or an instruction to stretch through discomfort.
