Cello C string notes and first-position chart
The cello C string sounds C2 when played open. This selected first-position chart shows C2 (open), D2 (finger 1), Eb2 (finger 2), E2 (finger 3), F2 (finger 4). Finger zero means an open string; the numbered fingers stop the string.

Read the hand frame
This is normal, unextended first position. First finger is two semitones above the open string, then fingers two, three and four each add one semitone. Extensions and shifts are not included.
The top note here, F2, uses fourth finger. The sequence from first to fourth finger spans three semitones; avoid copying a violin hand pattern onto this longer string.
A complete short exercise
- Play the open C string (C2) for four slow beats. Let the sound settle, then name the next pitch before moving.
- Play C2 - D2 - Eb2 - E2 - F2 and reverse the order, using one relaxed bow per note. Begin at a pace that lets you hear each change.
- Repeat just D2 to Eb2. This gap is one semitone (a half step). Compare the spacing with the note table rather than spreading every finger equally.
- Pause if the hand feels strained. The picture shows semitone relationships, not measured distances or an instruction to stretch through discomfort.
