School Orchestra Chair Test Preparation: Rhythm and Entry Drill
The director’s assigned music and rubric define a chair or placement test. Arco can help organize preparation but cannot predict seating, which may involve ensemble needs and criteria outside the app. Begin by making the exact passage and the assessed skills clear.
Arco preparation range: Middle/high school. Requirements belong to your institution and audition year; this is not a standardized syllabus.
Before you build a plan.
- Ask your director which bars, tempo guidance and assessment criteria apply.
- Mark rests, pickups, repeated sections and any instructed bowings.
- Separate pulse, pitch preparation and a controlled first entrance in your practice notes.
- Discuss seating feedback constructively rather than comparing an app indicator to another student’s placement.
Original exercise · No account needed
Enter after a rest
- Set a metronome to a comfortable pulse and count two bars of 4/4 without playing.
- Enter on beat one of the third bar with a single open-string note, held for four beats.
- Repeat after turning the metronome volume down; check whether the entry stayed aligned when you bring it back.
Check your work
Two bars of 4/4 contain eight quarter-note beats. The entry follows those eight beats, not the moment you feel ready. This drill checks a counted entrance, not pitch quality or a chair-test mark.
Arco wrote this supporting exercise. It is not a specimen board question, published syllabus requirement or official scoring rubric.
A common mistake
Skipping rests when practising alone makes the entry easier than the actual ensemble task. Count the full gap every time.

What is included, and what is not
Arco is independent of the exam boards and institutions. Packages provide preparation planning, requirements links and weekly task tracking, not exam entry, teacher assessment, official papers or a guaranteed result. Only published original knowledge-support collections are scored in question sessions; no question bank is promised for other selections. Instrument learning is a separate $15/month package. Each selected package is billed separately; review its terms before purchasing.
Question-session answers can be scored against the published answer key. Arco does not assess your playing or certify practical readiness from these exercises.
Keep the official source beside the plan.
