RCM Cello Certificate Preparation: Levels 3–8 Planning Guide
An RCM cello plan needs more than the repertoire volume. RCM currently lists the 2013 Cello Syllabus alongside errata and a musicianship addendum effective September 2024. Check all relevant documents together so an older book does not silently determine your listening and reading practice.
Arco preparation range: Levels 1–8. The package range is Arco’s current coverage, not the board’s complete qualification range.
Before you build a plan.
- Open the cello syllabus, its errata and the current musicianship addendum together.
- Confirm your level’s repertoire, technical and musicianship requirements with your teacher.
- Check applicable theory co-requisites and administrative rules separately.
- Arco currently offers cello preparation packages for Levels 3–8; that is a product range, not the full RCM qualification range.

Separate pitch memory from rhythm memory
- On a keyboard or other reference instrument, have a partner play three notes you can comfortably sing, using one simple rhythm.
- Echo the rhythm by clapping, then sing the pitch shape separately.
- Ask your partner which element changed. Repeat with a new three-note pattern, keeping only one challenge harder at a time.
Check your work
A correct rhythm with the wrong final pitch suggests a pitch-memory target; correct pitches with changed durations suggest a rhythm-memory target. This is an original learning drill, not an RCM aural test or its scoring rubric.
Arco wrote this supporting exercise. It is not a specimen board question, published syllabus requirement or official scoring rubric.
A common mistake
The date printed on a repertoire book does not confirm that its old musicianship instructions remain current. Check the addendum before constructing mock tasks.
Choose the actual pathway, level and instrument.

What is included, and what is not
Arco is independent of the exam boards and institutions. Packages provide preparation planning, requirements links and weekly task tracking, not exam entry, teacher assessment, official papers or a guaranteed result. Only published original knowledge-support collections are scored in question sessions; no question bank is promised for other selections. Instrument learning is a separate $15/month package. Each selected package is billed separately; review its terms before purchasing.
Question-session answers can be scored against the published answer key. Arco does not assess your playing or certify practical readiness from these exercises.
Keep the official source beside the plan.
