ABRSM Practical String Exam Preparation: Plan and Free Drill
A Practical Grade combines prepared playing with responding to tasks in the room. ABRSM describes three pieces alongside scales and arpeggios, sight-reading and aural tests. Give the unfamiliar tasks a place in the week instead of spending every session polishing the opening of a favourite piece.
Arco preparation range: Initial Grade–Grade 8. The package range is Arco’s current coverage, not the board’s complete qualification range.
Before you build a plan.
- Record the exact instrument, grade and syllabus edition with your teacher.
- Keep the official repertoire and technical-work lists beside your plan; this page does not reproduce them.
- Separate rehearsed repertoire from genuinely unseen reading and listening practice.
- Check entry requirements before booking, particularly when moving into Grades 6–8.
Original exercise · No account needed
A four-bar continuity drill
- Set a comfortable pulse. In 4/4, clap four quarter notes; then a half note and two quarter notes; then a quarter rest and three quarter notes; then one whole note.
- Count all four beats of every bar aloud. Repeat without returning to the start if you miss a clap.
- Name the bar that broke your pulse and practise its transition into the next bar once.
Check your work
Every bar totals four quarter-note beats. The rest occupies beat one of bar three; claps fall on beats two, three and four. Success means preserving the timeline, not turning a restart into a correct first attempt.
Arco wrote this supporting exercise. It is not a specimen board question, published syllabus requirement or official scoring rubric.
A common mistake
Repeating the same reading example until it is memorized tests rehearsal, not first-attempt reading. Use a new example for the next first-attempt check.

What is included, and what is not
Arco is independent of the exam boards and institutions. Packages provide preparation planning, requirements links and weekly task tracking, not exam entry, teacher assessment, official papers or a guaranteed result. Only published original knowledge-support collections are scored in question sessions; no question bank is promised for other selections. Instrument learning is a separate $15/month package. Each selected package is billed separately; review its terms before purchasing.
Question-session answers can be scored against the published answer key. Arco does not assess your playing or certify practical readiness from these exercises.
Keep the official source beside the plan.
