Double bass E string notes and first-position chart
The bass E string sounds E1 when played open. This selected first-position chart shows E1 (open), F#1 (finger 1), G1 (finger 2), G#1 (finger 4). These are sounding pitches; double bass parts are normally written one octave higher.

Read the hand frame
This is Simandl first position, using fingers one, two and four. First finger is two semitones above the open string; second and fourth each add one semitone. Half position and thumb position are not included.
Do not replace finger four with finger three on this reference. The lower-position 1-2-4 frame covers a whole step between first and fourth fingers. Return to open E1 between repetitions to hear a stable reference.
A complete short exercise
- Play the open E string (E1) for four slow beats. Let the sound settle, then name the next pitch before moving.
- Play E1 - F#1 - G1 - G#1 and reverse the order, using one relaxed bow per note. Begin at a pace that lets you hear each change.
- Repeat just F#1 to G1. This gap is one semitone (a half step). Compare the spacing with the note table rather than spreading every finger equally.
- Pause if the hand feels strained. The picture shows semitone relationships, not measured distances or an instruction to stretch through discomfort.
