Sight-reading for violinists

Reading music fluently is like reading a language, the more you do it, the less you think about it and the more you hear it. These lessons build your reading instincts from first position through the shifts you already know.

## Free lesson sample: Read four treble-clef notes for violin

Start with one reliable landmark: G4 on the second line from the bottom. Then follow adjacent lines and spaces instead of guessing a separate name for every note.

Before you start: This is a written-note exercise in treble clef, with no key signature or accidentals. Draw five horizontal lines on paper and count lines upward from the bottom. Use four quarter notes in one bar of 4/4.

### The example, written out
- second line → second space → third line → second space
- Rhythm: quarter · quarter · quarter · quarter. Count 1–2–3–4.

### Try it step by step
1. Draw one notehead at each position in the sequence. Label the clef so the staff positions are unambiguous.
2. Use G4 on the second line from the bottom to name the first note. Move forward one musical letter for each adjacent upward step, and backward one for each downward step.
3. Say the four note names on four equal beats. Check the answer, then cover the names and read the positions again.

### Worked answer
G4–A4–B4–A4. Each move to the neighbouring line or space changes the letter by one. The second space is A4 and the middle line is B4. The four quarter notes total four beats; neither a move up the staff nor a change of letter changes the note duration.

### Common mistakes
- A move from a line to the neighbouring space is one letter step, not two.
- Read the clef before applying a memorised line-note pattern.
