# Getting Started, Violin

Your instrument, your posture, your bow

Before you draw a single note, learn how the violin sits on your shoulder, how the bow lives in your right hand, and what each part of the instrument actually does. These foundations make every later technique feel natural instead of forced.

## Free lesson sample: Name and pluck the four violin strings

An open string sounds without a left-hand finger stopping it. The violin strings, from lowest to highest, are G3, D4, A4, E5.

Before you start: Use a comfortable, balanced violin setup, with a teacher helping you adjust the support if needed. Put the bow aside. Do not squeeze the instrument between your head and shoulder.

### The example, written out
- Ascending: G3 → D4 → A4 → E5.
- Descending: E5 → A4 → D4 → G3.
- Pluck once on beat 1; listen through beats 2–3–4.

### Try it step by step
1. Locate the lowest string, G3, and say its letter name. Pluck gently and let it ring for four steady beats.
2. Move through D4, A4, E5 in order. Say each letter before making a sound, then reverse the sequence.
3. Point to one string without following the sequence. Name it, pluck it, and compare its letter and octave with the tuner.

### Worked answer
The ascending order is G3–D4–A4–E5. Adjacent strings are tuned in perfect fifths. The number identifies the octave, not a finger number. Naming the strings is the goal here; if a string is badly out of tune, ask for help with the pegs rather than turning one repeatedly.

### Common mistakes
- The strings are not arranged in alphabetical order.
- A correct letter at the wrong octave is not the intended open-string pitch. Check that the tuner is hearing the string you are playing.
