# Treble clef: notes, landmarks and free reading exercises

Treble clef anchors G4 on the second line from the bottom. Its five lines read E4, G4, B4, D5, F5; its spaces read F4, A4, C5, E5.

## Instrument context

Start here for violin. Find the open A string as A4 in the second space, then locate the open E string as E5 in the top space. A note name tells you the pitch; it does not choose a string or finger for you.

## Staff map (bottom to top)

- Line 1: E4

- Space 1: F4

- Line 2: G4

- Space 2: A4

- Line 3: B4

- Space 3: C5

- Line 4: D5

- Space 4: E5

- Line 5: F5

## Middle C

C4 sits on the first ledger line below the staff. D4 is the space immediately below the bottom line, not a ledger line.

## Original exercises

### Step away and return

Begin on G4, move up one staff step twice, then return one step.

Written pitches: G4 → A4 → B4 → A4

Answer: G4 → A4 → B4 → A4. Each line-to-space or space-to-line move advances or reverses one letter.

### Open-string anchors

The first note is A4. Read the leap to the top space and the two notes that follow.

Written pitches: A4 → E5 → D5 → B4

Answer: A4 → E5 → D5 → B4. E5 is the top space; D5 is the line just below it; B4 is the middle line.

### Read below the staff

Begin on middle C. Read through the bottom line, then back to middle C.

Written pitches: C4 → D4 → E4 → C4

Answer: C4 → D4 → E4 → C4. Only C4 needs a ledger line in this pattern. C4 is above the violin’s lowest open G3; ask a teacher to help choose its fingering.

## Common mistake

Do not read every line as the next letter. Moving line to line skips a space: E4 to G4 skips F4. Count the intervening space whenever you need to check a leap.

## Transfer to your part

On a familiar violin phrase, mark one G4 and one open-string A4. Cover the finger numbers and read three notes relative to these anchors. Then restore the fingerings and check whether your pitch names agree.
