# Notes on the Page, Cello

Sight-reading for cellists

Reading music fluently is a superpower. This module teaches you to decode bass-clef notation at speed, rhythmic reading, note recognition on all four strings, and the strategies professional cellists use to learn new music quickly.

## Free lesson sample: Read a short bass-clef cello phrase

Bass-clef reading becomes easier when a few staff landmarks connect to notes you can already play. In standard bass clef, the second line from the bottom is B2, the second space is C3, and the middle line is D3.

Before you start: Use the textual staff positions below to identify each pitch before playing. The exercise is in 4/4 with no key signature: a quarter note (crotchet) lasts one beat, and a half note (minim) lasts two.

### The example, written out
- Bar 1: second space, quarter; middle line, quarter; second space, quarter; second line, quarter.
- Bar 2: middle line, half; second space, half.

### Try it step by step
1. Name all six notes using B2 on the second line as your starting landmark. Move one letter for each adjacent line or space.
2. Clap the rhythm: four one-beat notes, then two two-beat notes. Keep counting through the longer notes.
3. Play slowly. In first position, use G-string fourth finger for C3 and third finger for B2; use the open D string for D3.

### Worked answer
The notes are C3–D3–C3–B2 | D3–C3. On the G string, first-position C3 uses fourth finger and B2 uses third finger. D3 can use the open D string. One possible fingering is 4–0–4–3 | 0–4. Each bar totals four beats.

### Common mistakes
- Do not read the bass staff with treble-clef note names.
- Do not confuse a note name with a finger number: the same pitch can sometimes be played on more than one string.
