# The Inner Clock, Cello

Rhythm, subdivision, and pulse

Rhythm is the skeleton of music. This module builds a reliable internal pulse, teaches subdivision from quarter notes down to sixteenth-note triplets, and trains you to stay in the pocket with an ensemble.

## Free lesson sample: Keep the pulse through quarters, eighths, and a rest

The pulse stays steady even when the notes become shorter or the sound stops. Count the halfway point between beats with “and” so a pair of eighth notes fits inside the time of one quarter note.

Before you start: Set the metronome to a comfortable quarter-note pulse, for example 60 beats per minute. Clap first, then pluck open D. The exercise is in 4/4; each bar contains four beats.

### The example, written out
- Bar 1: quarter, quarter, two eighths, quarter.
- Count: 1, 2, 3 and 4 , .
- Bar 2: quarter, quarter rest, quarter, quarter.
- Count: 1, (silent 2), 3, 4 , .

### Try it step by step
1. Speak “1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and” evenly with the click on each number.
2. Clap bar one: one clap on beats 1 and 2, two claps on “3 and,” then one clap on 4. Do not speed up the count.
3. Clap bar two without making a sound on beat 2. Join the two bars and repeat, then transfer the pattern to open-string plucking.

### Worked answer
Bar one has five attacks but four beats; the two eighth notes share beat 3. Bar two has three attacks and one silent beat. The next bar still begins after beat 4, so the rest never shortens the measure.

### Common mistakes
- Two eighth notes are not two full beats when the quarter note has the beat.
- Do not stop the count during a rest or add a pause before restarting the pattern.
