# Intonation, Cello

Playing in tune without frets

Intonation, playing in tune, is the cello's greatest challenge and greatest reward. Learn to listen, adjust, use open strings as references, and develop the muscle memory of accurate pitch.

## Free lesson sample: Check a fingered G against the open G string

A tuned open string gives you a repeatable pitch reference. Fourth finger on the cello D string in first position plays G3, one octave above the open G string, G2. Comparing those notes lets you practise hearing octave agreement without relying only on a display.

Before you start: Tune the open strings first. Use light plucking or separate, slow bows, and let each pitch settle. This is a comparison between consecutive notes; playing both strings together is optional and not needed.

### The example, written out
- Reference: open G string = G2.
- Comparison: D string, fourth finger in first position = G3.
- Pattern: low open G → high fingered G → low open G → high fingered G.

### Try it step by step
1. Play open G and listen before placing the fourth finger on the D string.
2. Play the fingered G, then the open G again. Listen for an octave: the same note name in a higher register. Use the tuner to check G3 if octave matching is unfamiliar.
3. If it is low, move the stopping point slightly toward the bridge; if high, slightly toward the nut. Release excess pressure, reset, and compare again.

### Worked answer
The notes should form an octave, not a unison: G3 is higher than G2. Moving toward the bridge shortens the vibrating string and raises pitch. If the fingered G is sharp or flat relative to the intended octave, make a small adjustment. Aim to find the note again from a relaxed reset, not only to slide into it once.

### Common mistakes
- A brighter tone is not necessarily a higher pitch; compare the pitch centre, not just the sound colour.
- Avoid correcting a note by pulling the string sideways or gripping the thumb harder.
