# Tone & Bow Control, Double bass

Getting the bass to speak

The bass has heavy strings that need real arm weight and slow bow speed to speak fully. Learn how to draw a deep, sonorous tone, how contact point works on a low-tension instrument, and the foundational bowstrokes for orchestra and jazz.

## Free lesson sample: Plan a four-beat bow stroke on the double bass

Use open D2 to separate bow control from left-hand fingering. The task is to divide a comfortable bow length evenly across four beats, then return over the same length. These are sounding pitches; a normal double bass part writes them one octave higher.

Before you start: Tune the instrument. Start near the middle of the bow with a relaxed hold appropriate to your setup, German and French bow holds differ. Choose a slow, comfortable pulse; 60 beats per minute is an example, not a required test speed.

### The example, written out
- Open D2: down-bow for 1–2–3–4; up-bow for 1–2–3–4.
- Four down/up pairs; pause and release tension between pairs.

### Try it step by step
1. Choose a short bow length you can control. Begin from the string and spread that length over four counted beats.
2. Reverse the bow and return over the same length in four beats. Keep the bow on one string and watch the contact lane.
3. If you run out of bow before beat four, use less bow at the beginning. If the sound becomes rough, pause and change one variable at a time, such as reducing pressure or adjusting speed.

### Worked answer
Each direction lasts four beats. Reaching the planned end on beat four shows that the bow length and count agree. Listen for a sustained sound; a small change at the reversal is normal while learning. This exercise does not measure tone automatically, and a teacher can help distinguish a bow-path issue from an unsuitable contact point.

### Common mistakes
- Do not use extra pressure as the only response to a noisy sound.
- Do not force a full-bow stroke or keep playing through pain. A short, comfortable stroke is enough for this task.
