# Half & First Position, Double bass

The Simandl system, fingers 1, 2, and 4

The bass uses a different left-hand system than violin/viola/cello. The Simandl method assigns one finger per half step using fingers 1, 2, and 4, your 3rd finger only assists 4. Master this system in half and first position.

## Free lesson sample: Read and play a double bass D-string first-position pattern

This short pattern uses the D string: D2, E2, F2, F#2. It demonstrates Simandl first position only, not half position. Fingers 1, 2 and 4 stop the notes; finger 3 supports finger 4. These are sounding pitches; a normal double bass part writes them one octave higher.

Before you start: Tune the D string and choose a pace that gives you time to name each note. Plucking is fine. Use a teacher-approved hand frame and stop if the hand feels strained.

### The example, written out
- D2: open string (0) · 0 semitones above open D
- E2: finger 1 · 2 semitones above open D
- F2: finger 2 · 3 semitones above open D
- F#2: finger 4 · 4 semitones above open D

### Try it step by step
1. Play D2, then E2. The open-to-first-finger interval is a whole step, or two semitones.
2. Continue through F2 and F#2. Say the note name before placing the next finger.
3. Play the whole pattern upward and downward, one note per beat. Reset the hand between repetitions instead of gripping more tightly.

### Worked answer
Ascending fingers: 0–1–2–4; descending: 4–2–1–0. E2–F2 and F2–F#2 are each half steps. F natural uses finger 2, while F sharp uses finger 4; these are different pitches. This is one pattern, not every note available in first position.

### Common mistakes
- Do not copy the violin 1–2–3–4 frame onto this Simandl pattern.
- The table gives semitone relationships, not finger distances in centimetres. Instrument size and setup affect physical spacing.
