# Tutti (Italian, "all")

**Tutti indicates that the whole ensemble or the whole section plays, and in a concerto part it marks the orchestral passages where the soloist rests.**

In an orchestral part, tutti cancels a preceding solo or soli marking. In a concerto score it labels the sections where the orchestra plays alone, which the soloist uses to count and to prepare the next entry.

The related term soli means a subgroup, the first violins alone, for instance, plays a passage, distinguishing it from solo, which means one player. In a section part, the principal player takes anything marked solo unless the score says otherwise.
