# Half position

**Half position is the hand placement one semitone below first position, used on violin, viola, and cello to reach the lowest chromatic notes without stretching backwards.**

Rather than reaching back with the first finger from first position, the whole hand shifts down a semitone, keeping the normal finger spacing intact. It is the standard solution for passages sitting in flat keys on the lower strings, where several notes in a row need the lowered position.

Students often avoid it, preferring a backward extension of the first finger, which works for one note and collapses for three. Recognising when a passage genuinely lives in half position, rather than borrowing one note from it, is the skill.

On the double bass, half position is not an optional colour but a fundamental part of the Simandl system, and it carries a substantial share of the instrument’s lowest register.
