# ABRSM Initial Grade Strings: First-Exam Practice Routine

Try a calm first-start and rest-counting exercise for early string learning, then check Initial Grade requirements and Arco package options.

For a first exam, familiar routines can make the day easier to understand. Practise setting up, finding the starting note and keeping a short pulse before playing. This is general early-stage preparation, not the required Initial Grade repertoire or technical-work list.

## Before you build a plan

- Record the exact instrument, grade and syllabus edition with your teacher.

- Keep the official repertoire and technical-work lists beside your plan; this page does not reproduce them.

- Separate rehearsed repertoire from genuinely unseen reading and listening practice.

- Check entry requirements before booking, particularly when moving into Grades 6–8.

## Original exercise: A calm start in three actions

1. Without a time limit, settle the instrument and name the starting open string.

2. Count four even beats, then play four separate open-string notes at that pulse.

3. Rest for four beats and begin again without rushing the silent gap.

### Check your work

The sequence contains four preparation beats, four played beats and four rest beats. The learning goal is a repeatable start and a counted silence. A teacher should check comfortable setup and bow use.

## A common mistake

Adding speed before the learner can prepare and count calmly makes the routine less repeatable.
