# ABRSM Grade 8 Strings: Preparation Audit and Cold Starts

Audit a Grade 8 string preparation plan, identify recovery points and check entry requirements. Try an original cold-start exercise without a predicted exam mark.

For Grade 8 preparation, a useful audit asks whether each prepared work can begin securely beyond its opening. This does not replace the official technical, aural or reading requirements. Confirm entry eligibility with ABRSM before booking and use a teacher to judge musical readiness.

## Before you build a plan

- Record the exact instrument, grade and syllabus edition with your teacher.

- Keep the official repertoire and technical-work lists beside your plan; this page does not reproduce them.

- Separate rehearsed repertoire from genuinely unseen reading and listening practice.

- Check entry requirements before booking, particularly when moving into Grades 6–8.

## Original exercise: Three reliable restart points

1. In a prepared work, choose three structurally meaningful points, such as a new section or a return of the main idea.

2. Write the local key, first pitch, pulse and intended character at each point.

3. Ask a partner to select one; prepare silently and play a complete phrase without first playing from the beginning.

### Check your work

A secure start needs both a physical plan and musical context. If one point repeatedly fails, repair the approach to it and the phrase itself. These rehearsal checks do not reproduce an examiner’s requests or marking.

## A common mistake

Equating the hardest passage played once with complete exam readiness. Give aural, technical work and first-attempt reading separate attention.
